Selecting a Contractor

January 30, 2013 / blog /

There are two different approaches to selecting a contractor. You can bid your project out to multiple contractors and make a selection based upon price or you can interview contractors and make a selection based upon past projects, references and compatibility. Most folks seldom have a second chance to build their dream home. If you have experience working with contractors then you can appreciate how important the “relationship factor” becomes. We encourage you to learn more about us so you can experience the level of trust you’ll possess with a contractor who builds with integrity and commitment to your vision.

Bidding Your Project

January 30, 2013 / blog /

The most important and most difficult process in the pre-construction stage is understanding the bidding process. Is everyone bidding on the same thing?
Are you building a high-end or lower-end project? If one contractor is bidding low-end cabinets and the other high-end cabinets the bid with the low-end cabinets will obviously be less. Try to have an idea of what you’d like to spend on cabinets, flooring, lighting, fixtures and windows. If you don’t know, have the bidders all use the same cost “allowance” in their bids for the price of the items that may vary. That way the only costs that can vary are the cost of labor and the contractor’s overhead and profit.
Remember your bidding will give you a range of costs to complete your project and the opportunity to spend some time with your potential Contractor, one who may soon become the most significant component of your team, lending his expertise on costs, design and methods.

Is it worth all the time, money and work?

Now is a very good time to add on to your home. The bank interest rates are low. The advantage in adding on to your home, instead of purchasing a new one for example, is you know what you have in your home, the neighborhood, family friends, mature landscaping. Familiarity is valuable. There is no familiarity in purchasing a new home, since you have no experience with it. Anything you do to an existing structure, will make it better, larger, and more valuable for the future.

How long does it take to complete an Addition?

The evolution of an addition is indeed a step by step fun and creative adventure. Additions are various sizes. Some can take as long as 3 months, and some can take up to 6 months, depending on the size and extent of the addition.
